Did you know that the Mediterranean diet along with the consumption of Extra Virgin Olive Oil helps reduce the risk of diabetes by 40%? This is according to the latest results of the PREDIMED study, which analysed the beneficial health properties of the Mediterranean diet.
The research “Prevention of Diabetes With Mediterranean Diets”, which was published in the magazine Annals of Internal Medicine,
found that this type of diet is a factor in the prevention of diabetes, a disease characterised by Ramón Estruch, the study coordinator, as “the epidemic of the 20th century”.
To arrive at these conclusions, researchers analysed the diet of about 7,500 people over the course of five years. They found that subjects who followed the Mediterranean diet supplemented with Extra Virgin Olive Oil showed a 40% reduction in the risk of developing diabetes compared with those who simply followed a diet low in all types of fats.
This won’t be the only phase of the study, according to Estruch. In fact, there is a second part, called PREDIMED Plus, which will study if a diet supplemented with Extra Virgin Olive Oil is also helpful for overweight and obese people. What do you think the results of that study will be?
Whatever the conclusion, we are once again celebrating that the Mediterranean diet, declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, is one of the healthiest on the planet.
The Mediterranean diet has many benefits and is very easy to introduce into your daily life. All you have to do is use Olive Oil as your main source of fat; eat lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, mushrooms, nuts and whole grain foods like pasta and rice on a daily basis; and eat only occasionally eggs, red meat and processed sweets.
Fish, dairy and in-season produce are equally important, as well as regular physical activity.
