Cottage pie

The roots of cottage pie trace back to rural England in the 18th century, a time marked by the industrial revolution and social change. Back then, the word "cottage" referred to modest countryside homes inhabited by agricultural workers and working-class families. These families, with limited resources but abundant culinary ingenuity, invented the cottage pie as a clever way to make the most of inexpensive and readily available ingredients.

Although it's a dish traditionally associated with British cuisine, its influence has spread to other parts of the world, including the United States. In areas like New England, South Florida, and California, you can find versions of Cottage Pie on restaurant menus and in the home kitchens of families with British roots.

How to make cottage pie step by step

  1. In a large skillet, heat two tablespoons of Spanish olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, two chopped carrots, and two chopped celery stalks, and sauté until tender and golden.
  2. Add the two chopped garlic cloves to the vegetables and cook for another minute.
  3. Incorporate the ground beef into the skillet and cook until well browned and cooked through.
  4. Add the 2 tablespoons of tomato paste and 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour to the skillet and stir well to combine all ingredients.
  5. Pour the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce into the skillet and mix until the mixture is well combined and thickened. Simmer for a few minutes until the sauce has reduced slightly.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350ºF(180ºC).
  7. Transfer the meat mixture to a oiled baking dish and spread evenly. Brush a baking dish with Spanish olive oil in which to transfer the meat mixture and spread all over the tray.
  8. In the meantime peel and cut the potatoes into chunks. Cook them in water with a teaspoon of salt (optional) until tender (15-20 minutes).
  9. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Mash to a smooth puree.
  10. Add 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil and the hot milk. Mix well.
  11. Spoon the mashed potatoes over the meat.
  12. Place the Cottage Pie in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  13. Remove from the oven and let rest for a few minutes before serving.
  14. Serve the Cottage Pie and enjoy this delicious homemade meal.
